Kwan’s most recent novel Sex and Vanity — his initially follow-up to the CRA set of three, which generated a film adjustment that earned over $200-million around the world — is a retelling of E. M. Forster’s A Room With a View. In Kwan’s grasp, the traditionally white, British story’s setting gets an update from the mid 1900s to the 2010s, exchanging a cast of characters from England’s stodgy elite for one of rich, fly setting Asian socialites. What’s more, in conventional Kwan design, Sex and Vanity happens during a hurricane, end of the week long wedding (this time in Capri) where hero Lucie Churchill accidentally succumbs to the reserved George Zao.

It’s a story Kwan has needed to tell for more than 10 years, yet in the midst of a worldwide pandemic and an across the nation dealing with systematized prejudice, will perusers have a similar craving for such extravagant idealism? “We live in an insane, appalling world, however as people, we as a whole need a discharge valve on occasion,” Kwan counters. “You need to discover some chuckling through the tears, correct?
